Pay by Bank creates a secure GoCardless link for a one-off bank payment. The customer opens the link, chooses their bank and approves the payment themselves. They do not share online banking details with Surehand.

Use Pay by Bank when the customer needs to actively approve a payment and faster confirmation matters. Use Direct Debit for eligible repeat collections under an active mandate.

Pay by Bank does not require the customer to have a Direct Debit mandate. Creating the link does not mean the invoice has been paid.

Instructions for your platform

Choose where you’re using Surehand. We’ll remember your selection for the next guide.

Create a Pay by Bank link on the web

  1. Open the customer and choose Invoices or Payments.
  2. Start Take Payment for the relevant invoice.
  3. Choose Pay by Bank as the payment method.
  4. Check the invoice and amount, and add a useful description if needed.
  5. Choose Create Payment Link.
  6. Copy the secure link and send it to the customer, or open it to check the GoCardless payment page.

The link gives the customer access only to the GoCardless payment flow, not to your Surehand account.

Follow the result

The payment initially shows as awaiting customer approval. Surehand updates it as GoCardless reports the bank payment's progress and updates the linked invoice when the payment is confirmed.

If the customer abandons the flow or the payment fails, the invoice remains due. Send a new Pay by Bank link only after checking that the earlier payment did not complete.

Avoid duplicate payment requests

Do not create a Pay by Bank link for an invoice that already has a Direct Debit, card payment or another Pay by Bank payment processing. Check the customer payment history first.

Pay by Bank confirmation can be faster than Direct Debit, but confirmation and settlement are not the same thing. Use the status shown in Surehand rather than assuming the money has arrived because the customer opened or approved the link.
